The Smart Energy Systems Team of Elin VERD proudly participates at the H2020 Project FLEXIGRID<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

In order\nto reach the Paris Agreement objectives and achieve a more sustainable energy\nsystem, the EU is aiming at increasing up to at least 32% the share of renewables\nin energy consumption. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Towards this end, the FLEXIGRID project will develop a set of solutions to address, under a cost-efficient basis, the challenges for reliability, stability and security of supply, which the electricity grid is expected to face as a result of the increasing share of variable renewables in the energy system. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

On the 30th and 31st of last October,\nZaragoza (Spain) hosted the kickoff meeting of FLEXIGRID, an innovation action\nproject funded by EU\u00b4s Horizon 2020, which brings together a consortium of 16\npartners, led by CIRCE, representing the whole energy value chain. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Two RTOs (CIRCE and LINKS) and two\nuniversities (UNICAN and UNIZG-FER) will work together with five technology\nproviders, counting three large companies (ATOS, OP&A and ZIV) and two SMEs\n(HYPERTECH and SELTA) to develop innovative solutions and deploy them in four\ndemo sites, represented by three DSOs (VIESGO, HEP-ODS, EDYNA) and two large\ncompanies (Elin VERD, IOSA). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Finally, two associations, (CAP and CEDEC),\nwill ensure the exploitation and dissemination of the project results within\nthe European energy community. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

FLEXIGRID will last 48 months and has\nallocated a total budget of 8.54 Million Euros. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

The project aims at putting into practice new\ntools to allow the distribution grid to operate in a secure and stable manner,\nwhen a large share of variable renewable electricity sources is connected to\nlow and medium voltage grids. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Concretely, through the development of\ninnovative hardware and software solutions, partners will seek: <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

– to improve\nthe power system flexibility, <\/strong>by enhancing the grid hosting capacity of\nrenewables <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

– to increase\nthe observability, controllability and automation <\/strong>of the network systems,\nfor the improvement of both the security <\/strong>and resilience <\/strong>of the\ngrid <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

– to mitigate\nshort-term and long-term congestions <\/strong>in the distributed grid from an\neconomically efficient point of view <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

– to ensure the interoperability and\ncompatibility <\/strong>of the developed solutions with different platforms used by\nEuropean DSOs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

These solutions will be implemented in eight\nuses cases, which will be demonstrated in four demo-sites: a rural and\nperi-urban network in the Spanish grid, a hotel in the Greek Island of Thassos;\nan urban grid in the city of Zagreb, accounting congested areas and an isolated\nvalley in the South-Tyrol region of Italy, with more than 50% of hydroelectric\nenergy. Moreover, the project will help identifying and analysing, through a\nconstant monitoring of the legislation, the obstacles to innovation under the\ncurrent local and European regulatory framework. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

Last but not least, FLEXIGRID partners wish to raise awareness among citizens and other relevant stakeholders on the transition towards a low carbon economy, considering them as active players within the energy system. The ultimate goal of the FLEXIGRID project is to develop new innovative, scalable and cost-efficient solutions to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and to the 2030 EU climate objectives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
